FOREIGN FILM PRODUCTIONS GENERATED A RECORD ฿7.51 BILLION IN THAILAND IN NINE MONTHS. 423 PRODUCTIONS. THE US ALONE BROUGHT ฿2.4 BILLION. AND THE YEAR IS NOT OVER.

Foreign film productions generated more than ฿7.51 billion ($215 million) in Thailand between January and September 2026, the highest nine-month figure on record. Deputy government spokesperson Ploythalay Laksameesangchan announced the milestone on October 4. A total of 423 foreign productions applied for permission to shoot in the country during that period. The United States led on investment value with 38 productions bringing in ฿2.379 billion. China recorded the most projects at 52, generating ฿253 million. Singapore followed with 24 productions worth ฿253 million. France brought 17 productions worth ฿185 million.

The numbers have been building all year. In the first half alone, 302 productions invested ฿4.025 billion, which was already more than half of the full-year 2025 total. Thailand's cash rebate program, which offers up to 30% back on qualifying production spending, is a major reason international crews keep coming. Feature films brought the biggest individual investments. Game shows and reality programs generated ฿811 million in the first half. Commercials accounted for 152 of the 302 first-half projects. Netflix and the booming vertical-drama market are driving a new wave of productions that did not exist five years ago. Thailand hosted 546 foreign productions in 2025, generating ฿7.717 billion for the full year. The 2026 total has nearly matched that in just nine months. The Department of Tourism estimates the full-year number could reach ฿8-10 billion. For anyone working in production, hospitality, location services or any industry that supports film crews, the pipeline is real and it is growing. Thailand is not just a tropical backdrop for Hollywood anymore. It is becoming a production hub.

Bottom line: ฿7.51 billion in nine months. 423 productions. The US, China, Singapore and France leading the spend. Full-year projections of ฿8-10 billion. The cash rebate works. The crews keep coming. And every production that shoots in Thailand becomes a tourism commercial that the country did not have to pay for.

THAILAND'S LTR VISA JUST CROSSED 12,000 APPROVALS. $1.28 BILLION IN ECONOMIC VALUE. HERE IS WHO IS COMING AND WHAT IT MEANS.

Thailand's Long-Term Resident visa program has approved 12,010 foreign nationals since its launch in September 2022, generating approximately $1.28 billion (฿43 billion) in economic value, according to the Board of Investment. BOI Secretary General Narit Therdsteerasukdi said each LTR visa holder generates an average of $107,000 (฿3.6 million) in economic value through visa fees, spending, direct investment and tax revenue. The United States accounts for the largest group with more than 2,400 approvals. Japan follows with 1,300. The United Kingdom has more than 1,000.

The breakdown by category tells you who is actually moving to Thailand under this program. Wealthy pensioners are the largest group at 4,561 approvals, which should surprise nobody who has spent time in Hua Hin, Chiang Mai or the islands. Dependents account for 3,891. Highly skilled professionals total 1,779. Work-from-Thailand professionals, who work remotely for overseas employers, come in at 1,043. Wealthy global citizens account for 737. Among the professionals and remote workers, 54% hold executive-level positions and 36% are working professionals. These are not backpackers extending their stay. They are people with money, careers and a reason to put down roots. The BOI rolled out a new digital processing portal in September 2026 to handle rising application volumes and remove the administrative delays that had been slowing approvals. 12,000 in four years is a solid start, but the pace needs to accelerate if Thailand wants to compete with Portugal, the UAE and Malaysia for the global talent pool that works from anywhere and chooses where to live based on quality of life, tax treatment and how easy the government makes it to stay.

Bottom line: 12,010 approvals. $1.28 billion in economic value. Americans lead, followed by Japanese and British nationals. The LTR visa is working, but 3,000 approvals a year in a country that wants to be a global talent hub is a trickle, not a flood. The digital portal upgrade is a step. The question is whether Thailand can turn the trickle into a stream before competitors capture the same people.

The Thai Airways baggage backlog is almost cleared. The airline expected to clear the remaining 1,092 bags today Monday, October 5. Pet lovers are upset after PM Anutin's "save humans first" message during flood rescues. During a visit to Nakhon Sawan, the PM urged evacuees to move to high-ground shelters first and temporarily leave pets to be handled by local authorities, rather than risking their lives staying behind in flooded homes. Pet owners and animal welfare advocates pushed back on social media. The criticism highlights a tension that surfaces every time a natural disaster forces rescue teams to make choices: resources are limited, and the PM's message was about keeping people alive first. The pushback is emotional. The directive is pragmatic. Both are understandable.
