🗞️ TOP STORY

THE DUTCH EMBASSY LAND ON WIRELESS ROAD JUST SOLD FOR MORE THAN ฿20 BILLION. NOW WE KNOW WHY THE 100-YEAR-OLD HOUSE COULD NOT BE SAVED.

Two Thai property groups have reportedly bought the former Dutch Embassy site on Wireless Road for more than ฿20 billion ($575 million). Thai business media identify the buyers as the Piyasombatkul group, known for Emporium Tower, Chatrium Hotels and Shrewsbury International School, and a company controlled by Chali Sophonpanich, a member of the family behind Bangkok Bank. The plot covers nearly 20 rai between Wireless Road and Soi Ton Son in central Bangkok. At ฿20 billion, the price works out to roughly ฿2.52 million per square wah. Valuers had put the market rate at ฿2.8 to 3.5 million per square wah before the sale was reported. Reports suggest the two buyers will split the site and develop their halves separately, with early plans pointing to branded residences and a health and wellness project.

This is the sequel to the story we ran on Monday about the 100-year-old house that once served as the Dutch ambassador's residence being demolished on Wireless Road. The community tried to save it. Now we know why it was never going to survive. The Dutch government bought the land in 1949 for just ฿1.85 million. They sold it in 2026 for more than ฿20 billion. That is a return of more than 10,000 times in 77 years on what is now one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in Southeast Asia. The embassy moved to Dusit Central Park in August 2026 and put the land on the open market. A colonial villa commissioned by a Siamese prince in 1911 was standing between two property developers and ฿20 billion worth of dirt. The house was never going to win that fight. Neither the embassy nor either buyer has issued a public statement on the reported sale.

Bottom line: ฿20 billion. Nearly 20 rai on Wireless Road. The Piyasombatkul group and a Sophonpanich-linked company are the buyers. Branded residences and a wellness project are the plan. The 100-year-old house was demolished because it was sitting on top of one of the most expensive pieces of land in the country. The heritage was worth preserving. The land was worth ฿20 billion.

MORE THAN 20 WILD OTTERS APPEARED IN A BANGKOK CANAL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 40 YEARS. NOBODY CAN EXPLAIN WHY.

More than 20 otters were spotted swimming and catching fish in Bangkok Noi Canal near Bang Khu Wiang in Nonthaburi on October 5 at around 3PM. Both large and small otters were seen hunting in the waterway, forming two separate groups on opposite sides of the canal. Residents living along the canal told reporters they had been there for more than 40 years and had never seen so many otters in the area. About two years ago, three or four had been spotted along the same stretch of water. Now there are more than 20.

Otters are protected wildlife in Thailand and natural predators of fish in canal ecosystems. Their sudden appearance in numbers nobody has seen in four decades has generated excitement and curiosity along the canal, but as of the time of reporting, no government department or wildlife expert had offered an explanation for why they gathered. There are a few possibilities. The recent flooding may have pushed the otters from upstream habitats into urban canals where fish populations are temporarily concentrated. Improved water quality from weeks of heavy rain could have made the canal more hospitable. Or the otters have simply been there in smaller numbers for years and the conditions aligned for a larger group to appear at once. Whatever the reason, 20-plus otters fishing in a canal that runs through one of the most urbanized areas in Thailand is the kind of story that reminds you the city shares its water with wildlife that was here long before the concrete arrived.

Bottom line: more than 20 otters. Bangkok Noi Canal. First sighting at this scale in 40 years. Nobody knows why they showed up. But they did, and if you live near Bang Khu Wiang in Nonthaburi, you might want to take a walk along the canal this week. They are still there.

The trajectory is not slowing down. It is accelerating. Nene Royal is 16 years old and her resume now includes America's Got Talent champion, Linkin Park guest performer, CP Group condo recipient, Siam Paragon parade honoree and Disney voice actress for the Thai market. The girl from Phuket is building a career in real time.

Thailand asked firms to cut egg exports after flood losses damaged supply. The government is intervening directly in the egg market to ensure domestic availability. The request follows weeks of flooding that disrupted farms and distribution across several provinces. This is the second food supply intervention in a week, after vegetable prices rose ฿10-15 per kilo. When the government starts asking companies to reduce exports to protect domestic supply, the flooding's economic impact has moved from infrastructure damage into food security territory.

Thailand is preparing four flood scenarios for the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings running October 12-18 in Bangkok. More than 10,000 international delegates are expected. PM Anutin has ordered measures to prevent travel disruption at airports and immigration points. The meetings represent the biggest international event Bangkok will host this year, and the government is acutely aware that images of flooded streets reaching a global financial audience would undo months of tourism recovery work. The four scenarios range from manageable to severe, depending on how the October 11-14 weather system behaves.

Central Plains floods are easing, but the risk is moving South. The RID has opened a 24-hour flood crisis center to manage Chao Phraya and Pasak river flows. Southern Thailand is bracing for heavy rain as the weather pattern shifts. Bangkok's canal system is being pre-drained ahead of the next storm system.

🍷 SPOT OF THE DAY

Piche Wine Bar sits inside the 24BLVD complex on Soi Sukhumvit 24 and holds a distinction that no other bar in Bangkok can claim: it is Thailand's first wine-on-tap bar. Founded in May 2025, Piche serves red, white, sparkling and orange wines fresh from the tap, temperature-controlled and poured to order. The concept breaks the traditional wine bar model where you commit to a bottle or trust a glass poured from something that has been open for two days. At Piche, you taste before you choose. The food menu runs alongside the wines: Scallops Ceviche, Beef Tartare, Mushroom Toast, Wagyu Striploin, Grilled Seabass and a Ferrero Rocher ice cream that reviewers consistently mention as the finish. A hi-fi sound system plays house and soul music, and the energy shifts from after-work chill to late-night social as the evening goes on.

At ฿500+ per person, Piche sits in the sweet spot between neighborhood bar and hotel lounge. At ฿300+ per glass for wine on tap, reviewers say the pricing is fair for the quality and the experience of tasting before committing. "Thailand's first wine-on-tap bar" sounds like a gimmick until you realize it solves the oldest problem in wine bars: ordering a glass of something you have never tried and hoping for the best. Piche lets you taste first. That alone is worth the visit. The 24BLVD complex on Sukhumvit 24 is an outdoor food and drinking community, so the setting extends beyond the bar itself.

Insider tip: go early (5-6PM) and taste at your own pace. The Beef Tartare and Scallops Ceviche pair well with the sparkling tap. The Wagyu Striploin calls for the red. Opens 5PM Wednesday.
