MORE THAN 600 PROTESTERS MARCHED FROM THE KHLONG TOEI SLUM TOWARD THE IMF-WORLD BANK MEETINGS YESTERDAY. THEY CALLED IT "FINANCIAL COLONIALISM."

The People's Network Against the World Bank and IMF organized a march through central Bangkok on October 15, bringing more than 600 people from Khlong Toei and surrounding communities toward the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre where 15,000 delegates were meeting inside. Police blocked the march at the Rama IV intersection at around 8AM, causing traffic disruptions across the area. Apart from a minor scuffle on a pedestrian bridge, the protest was peaceful. In a declaration read by a representative, the network accused the World Bank and IMF of imposing "financial, fiscal, investment and development colonialism" that excluded communities from decisions affecting their land and livelihoods. They asked a question that nobody inside the convention center was asking: "Who would benefit from the government's goal of turning Thailand into a high-income country?"

The geography of this protest tells the story better than any speech could. Khlong Toei is Bangkok's largest and oldest slum community. It sits directly adjacent to QSNCC. The protesters walked from one of the poorest neighborhoods in Bangkok toward the building where the world's richest financial decision-makers were discussing global growth strategies. The contrast was impossible to miss. The marchers linked the meetings to household debt, environmental damage and the exclusion of communities from development decisions that reshape their neighborhoods. The sit-in is scheduled to continue through today, October 16. For residents in the Rama IV and Sukhumvit corridor, this means continued traffic disruptions. For the broader conversation about who benefits from Thailand's economic direction, this is the moment the question moved from panel discussions to the street outside.

Bottom line: More than 600 people marched from the Khlong Toei slum to the doorstep of the IMF-World Bank meetings. They called it financial colonialism. Police blocked them at Rama IV. The sit-in continues today. Whether you agree with the protesters or the delegates, the image of Bangkok's poorest community marching toward the building where the world's financial elite were meeting is one of the most powerful visuals of the week.

BANGKOK'S WINTER IS COMING LATE THIS YEAR. AND WHEN IT ARRIVES, IT WILL BE WARMER THAN USUAL.

The Thai Meteorological Department announced on October 15 that Thailand's cool season will start about a week later than normal this year, arriving in the third week of October and lasting through mid-February 2027. Bangkok is forecast to see minimum temperatures of 19-21°C, with surrounding provinces dropping to 18-20°C. The average minimum temperature across upper Thailand is expected to be 22-23°C, roughly 2 degrees above the historical average of 19.9°C. Last year's cool season averaged 19.6°C. This year will be warmer. El Nino may be partly responsible.

For anyone who has lived in Bangkok through a cool season, the practical difference between 19°C and 21°C is the difference between needing a jacket in the morning and just wanting one. The coolest period is expected from late December 2026 through early February 2027. That is when Bangkok mornings actually feel different: cooler air, morning fog, the kind of weather that makes outdoor breakfast at a canal-side cafe feel like a different city entirely. The North and Northeast will still experience genuinely cold mornings, with mountain peaks seeing frost and temperatures as low as 7-8°C. But for Bangkok residents, this winter will be shorter, warmer and less dramatic than what long-term residents remember from years past. The TMD also warned that cooler temperatures bring the return of PM2.5 pollution as high-pressure systems trap particulate matter. The air that felt so clean during the October rains will not last forever. Enjoy it while it does.

Bottom line: Cool season starts third week of October, about a week late. Bangkok lows of 19-21°C (66-70 °F). Warmer than last year. Coldest period late December through early February. Enjoy the clean October air while you can because PM2.5 comes back with the cool season. If you have been waiting for "Bangkok winter," it is almost here. Just do not expect it to be as cold as last year.

⚡ QUICK HITS

The IMF just forecast Thailand's GDP growth at 2.1% for 2026, putting it among the slowest in ASEAN. The forecast was delivered at the Bangkok meetings on October 15. That number validates what former Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said on Tuesday when he called Thailand "the sick man of Asia." Vietnam and Indonesia are growing at 5-6%. Thailand is stuck at 2.1%. The IMF delivered the diagnosis at the meetings Thailand spent years preparing to host. The Thai Finance Ministry pushed back, rejecting the "fragile economy" label, but the numbers are the numbers.

Bangkok closed Ratchadaphisek Road both ways and banned drones on October 15-16 for the IMF-World Bank meetings. The traffic restrictions affected commuters across the Sukhumvit and Rama IV corridors. Separately, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand banned all drone operations in the VT R1 Bangkok City restricted airspace for the entire day today, October 16, from midnight to midnight. If you fly a drone in central Bangkok, today is not the day.

Thai Airways just admitted the baggage crisis was five times worse than it originally reported. The airline now says 25,000 bags were stranded and more than 200 flights were cancelled during the September flooding, far beyond the initial numbers. Chairman Lavaron Sangsnit announced on October 14 that compensation will be paid to all affected passengers without requiring them to file complaints. The airline will also forward delayed bags through any carrier, not just Thai Airways flights, to get belongings to passengers faster. A special compensation package including extra frequent-flyer miles is being proposed to the board. The crisis led to CEO Chai Eamsiri's suspension on October 2. He later said he had effectively been dismissed. If you flew Thai Airways in late September and lost a bag, compensation is coming to you. You do not need to do anything (hopefully).

One Bangkok announced "One Oktoberfest" from October 28 to November 1. The event brings Bavarian-style beer, food and entertainment to the One Bangkok complex. Five days. If you missed every other Oktoberfest event this season, this is your last chance.

🌴 SPOT OF THE DAY

Lamaya is not just a rooftop bar. It is a full evening experience built around a tribal-jungle-Mayan aesthetic that is as far from "minimalist hotel rooftop" as Bangkok has ever gone. The name combines "La" (the) and "Maya" (illusion), and the space on the 30th floor of the Staybridge Suites on Sukhumvit 24 delivers on the concept: lush tropical greenery, tribal art, carved statues and cocktails served in ornate deity-shaped glasses. The venue runs on phases throughout the evening. Afternoon tea and cafe until 4PM. Sky jungle cocktail lounge from 5PM to 10PM with live jazz and lighting shows at 7PM, 9PM and 10PM. Fire shows from talented dancers twirling flames on weekends. Then full "Jungle Club" mode from 10PM onward with DJ sets. The indoor restaurant features a live band nightly from 8PM. The food menu covers Salmon Ceviche, Tiger Prawn Skewers, Beef Tacos, Scallops, Iberico Pork and a Hainanese Chicken Rice set.

The 4.7-star rating across 1,328 Google reviews is the score of a venue that commits fully to the experience rather than playing it safe. "Amazing food, great music, and the staff assisted with photos," one reviewer wrote. Another said "great rooftop bar with a stylish restaurant inside and a balcony with a DJ and an amazing view." A third described the light show as "quite a unique experience." All cocktails run ฿420. The Navajo (Jack Daniel's and lychee) is the one reviewers keep recommending. Outdoor seating carries a ฿1,000 minimum. Lamaya is the spot where the evening starts with sunset cocktails and ends whenever the jungle lets you go.

Insider tip: Arrive around 7PM for the first light show, catch the fire show at 8PM on weekends, then decide if you want to stay for the late-night jungle club. Book through Bistrochat. The indoor live band is worth catching before heading to the rooftop. ID required at entry.
