A fire tore through Khlong Thom Centre on Friday night, starting at 8:42PM in a ground-floor shop packed with electronics, plastics and wiring. Within 30 minutes, flames had reached the mezzanine level beneath the parking area. Explosions were heard as stored materials ignited. The steel-framed roof sections, awnings and parking-level floors sagged under the heat and collapsed inward. Firefighters from nine stations across Bangkok responded but could not enter the building because the exterior walls blocked water streams and the structure was no longer safe to stand inside. A water shortage during the operation made conditions worse. By 11:13PM, the BMA reported the blaze was under control. By Saturday afternoon, it erupted again, sending thick black, grey and reddish-brown smoke back into the sky.

Eleven people were injured, including nine volunteer firefighters. One is in critical condition on a ventilator after inhaling toxic smoke. No deaths have been reported. PM2.5 around the building hit 630 micrograms per cubic meter, more than 40 times the WHO safe guideline. Smoke drifted as far as Bang Sue. Governor Chadchart inspected the site Saturday morning and said hotspots remained buried beneath collapsed wreckage, making it difficult for water to reach the source. Excavators were prepared overnight but engineers needed to assess whether the remaining structure could support heavy machinery. The 20-year-old centre covers roughly four rai and housed hundreds of small shops selling electronics, tools, lighting, CCTV equipment, auto parts and household goods. By Saturday morning, 70 traders had registered for assistance at the BMA coordination centre set up at Wat Phra Phiren across the road. More than 300 are expected to need help. The full financial damage has not been assessed because the site is still too dangerous to enter.

Bottom line: Khlong Thom Centre is not gone in the way that a demolition removes a building. It is gone in the way that a fire removes everything inside one. The shell is barely standing. The shops are not. Hundreds of small businesses that operated inside that building woke up Saturday morning with nothing. Avoid the area entirely. The smoke is toxic, the structure is unstable and the fire keeps reigniting. Bloomberg published a feature this week on Baan Im Jai, a city-run homeless shelter inside the former Maen Si Waterworks building that accommodates 200 people and operates on a model adapted from wealthy Western countries that have proven one thing: giving people a stable place to live first, before asking them to fix everything else, works better than the other way around. The shelter follows a "low-barrier" approach: no mandatory criminal background checks, no drug screenings at the door. Anyone who needs help can walk in. The program runs on what it calls the "6 As" principle: housing, food, hygiene, clothing, occupation and savings.

Bloomberg told the story through Shutana Chokchaimongkol, a 50-year-old who was working as a food delivery rider when he crashed his motorbike into a car on Christmas Day 2024. The accident shattered his collarbones and caused a brain hemorrhage. He lost his ability to work, defaulted on his loan, was evicted from his apartment and ended up sleeping under highways and on bus stop benches for months. He heard about Baan Im Jai while living in a public park. He signed up. He is now taking a handyman course inside the shelter, learning skills that will let him work again. Bangkok is home to 50% of Thailand's entire homeless population, with 1,274 people counted on the capital's streets. The shelter offers three tiers: emergency beds for up to seven nights, transitional housing for people who have jobs but need a stable address, and a voluntary two-month rehabilitation program with vocational training.

Bottom line: most cities respond to homelessness by moving people from one public space to another. Bangkok is trying something different: giving people a stable address, a course and a path forward without requiring them to pass a background check before they are allowed through the door. It will not solve homelessness. But if Shutana's story is any indication, it solves the problem for the people it reaches.
