ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR 45 FOREIGNERS OVER NOMINEE PROPERTY SCHEMES IN BANGKOK. EIGHT NATIONALITIES NAMED. PROPERTIES WORTH ฿10-20 MILLION EACH.
Investigators identified six companies that used Thai shareholders as nominees to allow foreign nationals to own property in Thailand, a structure that violates the Foreign Business Act. Arrest warrants have been issued for 45 foreigners and summonses for 39 Thai nationals connected to the schemes. Among those detained were British, Chinese, Italian, French, Dutch, Austrian, Filipino and American nationals. The properties involved were reportedly worth between 10 million and 20 million baht each.
What makes this enforcement action different from the nominee crackdowns we have covered in Phuket, Koh Pha Ngan and Chiang Mai is what the detained foreigners told police. Several said they had wanted to own property in Thailand and that law firms or accounting companies had advised them to establish corporate structures they believed were legal. That detail matters because it suggests the nominee problem is not just about individuals trying to circumvent the law. It is about an advisory industry, lawyers, accountants and consultants, that has been building and selling nominee structures to foreign clients as a legitimate service. The enforcement is now reaching the people who bought those structures, but the people who designed and sold them are the ones who created the market. For any expat who currently owns property through a Thai company structure, the question is no longer whether these arrangements will attract scrutiny. It is whether the lawyer who set yours up will be the next one investigated.
Bottom line: 45 warrants. Eight nationalities. ฿10-20 million properties. If you own property in Thailand through a company structure, talk to a lawyer this week. Not the one who set it up. A different one. The enforcement environment has never been tighter, and "my accountant said it was fine" is not a legal defense.

Thailand celebrates Mother's Day on August 12, the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, who passed away in October 2025. The 2026 celebration carries particular significance as the first Mother's Day observed since her death, and the jasmine tradition that defines the holiday continues as one of Thailand's most recognizable expressions of gratitude.
The flower most associated with the day is dok mali, Jasminum sambac, a small white bud with a powerful, sweet fragrance. When August 12 was designated National Mother's Day in 1976, jasmine became its symbol. The white petals represent purity. The fragrance, gentle and lasting, represents the enduring nature of a mother's love. Children across Thailand present jasmine garlands to their mothers, grandmothers and maternal figures. Schools hold ceremonies in the days leading up to the holiday. Families gather for meals and temple visits. At Pak Khlong Talat, Bangkok's main flower market, vendors reported jasmine prices reaching up to ฿2,000 per kilogram in the days before the holiday, a reflection of demand so concentrated into a few days each year that the market can barely keep up. Government offices, banks and many businesses are closed today. If you pass a flower market or a temple ceremony, take a moment to watch. The garland-giving is one of the quieter, more beautiful traditions this city has.
Bottom line: call your mother. If she is in Thailand, bring her jasmine. If she is not, call her anyway. The tradition is Thai. The sentiment is universal. Happy Mother's Day.

Thailand is temporarily stopping all gun liscence renewals and accelerating a new firearms control law. PM Anutin announced at Government House on August 11 that the government has ordered relevant agencies to pause all gun lisence renewals while a new firearms law is drafted. He added that gun owners could still be breaking the law even if they shot a burglar inside their own home, signaling that the new legislation will tighten the circumstances under which lethal force is considered legally justified. The announcement follows two shootings in Nonthaburi in six days: the school attack that killed nine people and the former MP who shot the PAO president. The gun control debate that reignited after the school shooting now has legislative momentum behind it.
The Debsirin Nonthaburi school shooting death toll has risen to nine. Two more victims died in hospital over the weekend, bringing the total from seven to nine: four teachers, four students and the suspect. Fifteen were originally injured, with several in critical condition. The investigation into the suspect's access to the firearm continues.
