🗞️ TOP STORY

BANGKOK RANKED NUMBER ONE ON CHINA'S GOLDEN WEEK 2026 TRAVEL LIST. DESPITE THE FLOODS. DESPITE THE BAGGAGE CRISIS. DESPITE EVERYTHING.

Bangkok topped Tongcheng Travel's list of international destinations for China's National Day Golden Week 2026, beating Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Singapore, Bali and Ho Chi Minh City. Airlines increased flights from China to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos by a combined 20% for the holiday period. The Tourism Authority of Thailand had expected approximately 250,000 Chinese visitors during the extended holiday window from September 25 to October 7, generating roughly ฿11.5 billion in tourism revenue. Chinese arrivals surged 42.62% in the week before Golden Week began, and October flight bookings from China were up 16% with search volume climbing 24%.

What makes this story remarkable is that all of this happened after the worst flooding in Bangkok since 2011. Images of flooded streets, stranded passengers, the 10,000-bag luggage crisis and the Thai Airways CEO suspension were all over Chinese social media. The Chinese Embassy in Thailand issued a notice warning travelers about the conditions. The TAT acknowledged a possible 5-10% decline in arrivals due to what it called a "perception crisis." And yet Bangkok still landed at the top of the list. Part of the reason is that Japan dropped out of Tuniu's top 10, a shift driven by Beijing-Tokyo tensions that redirected Chinese travel demand toward Southeast Asia. But the bigger reason is simpler: Bangkok offers a combination of value, food, culture, nightlife and accessibility that Chinese travelers cannot find in a single package anywhere else. The floods did not change that. They just made the week more interesting.

Bottom line: Number one. Despite floods, baggage chaos and a CEO getting suspended. 250,000 expected Chinese visitors. ฿11.5 billion in projected revenue. If you notice more Mandarin than usual at CentralWorld this week, now you know why. Golden Week runs through October 7.

THE FLOODING IS HITTING YOUR GROCERY BILL. VEGETABLE PRICES ARE UP ฿10-15 PER KILO ACROSS THAI MARKETS.

A survey of fresh markets in Phitsanulok on October 2 found that prices had risen for all types of vegetables, averaging ฿10-15 more per kilogram than before the flooding. Leafy vegetables in Nakhon Ratchasima showed even sharper increases. The damage is straightforward: persistent rain for nearly a week destroyed crops across several of Thailand's main vegetable-growing provinces. Bangkok and Ayutthaya, which serve as collection and distribution hubs for produce from around the country, were themselves flooded, which disrupted the supply chain at the point where farm output meets market delivery.

The price increase matters most for the people who can least afford it. Low-income Thai families spend the largest share of their income on food, and vegetables are the cheapest source of nutrition in most household budgets. When the price of morning glory, Chinese kale and chili peppers jumps ฿10-15 per kilo, that is not a rounding error. It is a week of meals that now costs more. The squeeze will also start showing up at local restaurants. Street food vendors and neighborhood kitchens that operate on thin margins will either absorb the cost or raise prices. If your regular pad krapao or som tam costs ฿5-10 more this month, the flooding is why. Pork and chicken prices have stayed stable for now, but vegetables are the foundation of Thai cooking. When that foundation gets more expensive, everything built on top of it shifts.

Bottom line: ฿10-15 more per kilo on vegetables. Flood damage cut the supply. If you shop at fresh markets, you are already seeing it. If you eat at local restaurants, expect small price increases over the next few weeks. The squeeze lasts until new crops come in, which takes weeks, not days.

⚡ QUICK HITS

Nene Royal's victory parade is happening in Bangkok today. Siam Piwat and its partners are staging a welcome event and parade for the 16-year-old AGT champion. If you want to see the girl who won a million dollars on American television, taught herself guitar from YouTube and performed with Linkin Park, this is your chance. Check Siam Piwat's social channels for the exact route and timing.

Siam Amazing Park is not ruling out a sale after the flooding cost more than ฿500 million in damages. The owners have stated they would be willing to sell the business for ฿10 billion, excluding its 30-plus rides. The iconic Bangkok amusement park will remain closed for an estimated six months. The park sits in a low-lying area of eastern Bangkok that took the worst of the September flooding. If the park sells, Bangkok loses one of its oldest family entertainment venues, a place that has been part of the city for decades.

Thailand launched national disaster insurance covering 30 million homes. The government-subsidized program took effect October 1 with a ฿15.5 billion budget approved by the Cabinet. The insurance protects 30 million residential properties and is designed to help flood and disaster victims receive compensation faster than the traditional claims process. With 29 provinces still affected and 2.6 million people impacted by the current flooding, the program launches at the moment it is needed most.

More prolonged rain is forecast for central Thailand from October 11-14, after the current October 4-7 system passes. The TMD is warning of two weather systems in the span of 10 days. The first one starts today. The second arrives a week later. Bangkok and central Thailand are in the path of both. If eastern Bangkok has not fully drained from September, the back-to-back systems could slow the recovery further.

🧖 SPOT OF THE DAY

Vivana Wellness sits on Soi San near Sukhumvit 36 in the Thonglor area and combines ice baths, sauna sessions and a cafe into a single wellness space. The concept is simple: cold plunge, heat recovery and good coffee, all in one visit. The ice bath and sauna circuit is designed around the hot-cold contrast therapy method that has become popular worldwide, and Vivana brings it to Bangkok at prices that do not require a hotel spa budget. The cafe side of the business means you can follow a plunge and a sweat with a proper coffee and something to eat without leaving the building. In addition they also have individual infrared sauna pods, something not commonly found at other sauna and cold plunge facilities in Bangkok.

The 5.0-star rating across 51 Google reviews is a perfect score. "Great experience, relaxing, competitive prices, friendly staff," one reviewer wrote. Another said "coffee was good and very well priced as was the food menu." A third described "nice place for visiting, great people and very warm welcoming staff." The competitive pricing is the detail that matters most: ice bath and sauna experiences in Bangkok typically run ฿800-1,500 at dedicated wellness studios and much more at hotel spas. Vivana positions itself as accessible without cutting corners on the experience.

Insider tip: Book ahead via GoWabi. The ice bath plus sauna combo is the core experience. Stay for coffee afterward. Opens 10AM Sunday. BTS Thonglor area.
