🗞️ TOP STORY

BANGKOK CLEARED 10,000 TONNES OF FLOOD TRASH FROM ITS STREETS. THE CLEANUP IS STILL GOING.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announced that cleanup crews have removed more than 10,000 tonnes of flood debris from the city's streets since the September flooding began. The number puts the physical scale of the disaster into perspective in a way that economic damage figures and displacement numbers sometimes do not. 10,000 tonnes is roughly the weight of 1,400 adult elephants, or about 40 fully loaded Boeing 747s, sitting on the streets of a capital city in the form of mud, broken furniture, rotting food waste, tree branches, construction debris and everything else the floodwater carried through neighborhoods before it drained.

The cleanup operation has been one of the largest municipal mobilizations in Bangkok's recent history. Crews worked through streets that were underwater just weeks ago, clearing debris from roads, sidewalks, canals and public spaces across dozens of districts. The flood trash did not stay where it fell. As we reported earlier, tonnes of it washed downstream into the Gulf and back onto beaches like Bang Saen in Chon Buri. The 10,000-tonne figure covers only what was collected from Bangkok's streets, not what ended up in waterways, the ocean or private property. The real total is significantly higher. The city also accelerated this specific "Big Cleaning" operation to ensure the capital was presentable before the IMF-World Bank meetings began. For residents returning to neighborhoods that were submerged, the cleanup is personal: clearing their own homes, removing damaged furniture, scrubbing mud from walls and floors. The city handled the streets. The residents are handling everything else.

Bottom line: 10,000 tonnes of flood trash cleared from Bangkok streets. The equivalent of 1,400 elephants worth of debris. Crews are still working. The number will grow.

FIVE POLICE OFFICERS TRANSFERRED AFTER A KHAO SAN ROAD BAR RAID FOUND DRUGS, GUNS, A 15-YEAR-OLD AND SUSPECTED BRIBE RECORDS.

A special operations team from the Department of Provincial Administration raided OK Bar on Khao San Road at approximately 3:30AM on Saturday, October 10. Inside the unlicensed second-floor venue, they found 102 patrons, including 30 people under the age of 20 (the youngest was 15 years old), 31 people who tested positive for drugs, a firearm with ammunition, an imitation firearm, laughing gas balloons (161 boxes sold that night alone) and account books recording suspected monthly payments of nearly ฿180,000 to multiple agencies. The venue had been ordered closed by the Phra Nakhon district office in August 2026 but had allegedly continued operating. It is located less than 100 meters from Chana Songkhram Police Station.

That proximity is the detail that made this story explode. Metropolitan Police Bureau commissioner Siam Boonsom transferred five senior officers from Chana Songkhram station to inactive posts within hours. The officers, known locally as the station's "five tigers," had inspected the Khao San area at 1AM that same night and reported finding "no irregularities." Two and a half hours later, the Interior Ministry's team found everything. Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee said investigators would examine the suspected monthly payments to identify which agencies and individuals were receiving them. A staff member reportedly told investigators the actual owner of the bar was the wife of a police officer. The bar faces a five-year closure order and the manager faces eight charges. The raid has triggered a wider inspection order across Metropolitan Police Divisions 1 through 9 targeting similar venues. For anyone who goes out on Khao San, the crackdown is real and it is expanding beyond this single bar.

Bottom line: 102 patrons. 30 underage. 31 positive for drugs. A gun. Laughing gas. ฿180,000 in suspected monthly payments. Five senior officers transferred. The bar was 100 meters from the police station. The officers said they found nothing at 1AM. The Interior Ministry found everything at 3:30AM.

⚡ QUICK HITS

Something unpleasant happened at The Weeknd's Bangkok show. Concertgoers at Rajamangala Stadium reported being "stunned by suspected feces" on the standing room floor near the stage during the October 11 performance. The Bangkok Post reported the incident on October 12. Social media reactions from attendees describe an unexpected and deeply unpleasant experience at what was supposed to be the biggest concert event of the month. If you were there, you already know. If you were not, consider yourself lucky.

Suspended Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri sold 45,000 shares on October 9, one week after the board suspended him on October 2. The stock dump came shortly after his removal over the baggage crisis. Whether this is routine portfolio management or something more strategic is a question the market and regulators will be watching. The optics of selling shares one week after being suspended are not great regardless of the reason.

The IMF warned that Thailand faces an aging crisis as Asia hits a demographic turning point. The warning was delivered at the Bangkok meetings on day one through the IMF's study "Shaping the Future of Asia." Thailand's population is aging faster than most countries in the region, with a shrinking workforce that will compound economic pressures over the next two decades. This connects directly to the care home scandal from last week: an aging population needs more care facilities, and the current regulatory framework cannot ensure the ones that exist are safe.

The AGT champion headlines the welcome reception for the IMF-World Bank meetings, performing for the most senior delegates attending the Bangkok summit. From winning America's Got Talent in September to headlining a state reception for the world's financial elite in October. 🍽️ SPOT OF THE DAY

Gaa sits on Sukhumvit Soi 53 in the Thonglor corridor and operates as a 2-Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant that sources Thai ingredients and applies Indian-influenced technique to create something that does not exist anywhere else in Bangkok. The restaurant was founded by Chef Garima Arora, who trained under Gaggan Anand, and the menu is a tasting course that moves through dishes like Grilled Baby Corn, Pomegranate, Chicken Liver Fruit, Coconut and Rice Panki, Cauliflower Mushroom with Caramelized Whey and a Wild Mahua Flower Ice Cream that closes the meal. Caviar and a Signature Honey Snack appear across the courses. The wine list and juice pairing program are built to match each stage of the tasting menu.

The 4.4-star rating across 877 Google reviews at ฿2,000+ is the score of a restaurant where people have strong opinions in both directions, which is what happens when a chef takes risks. "The setting, service, food and atmosphere was five star," one reviewer wrote. Another said "I particularly enjoyed the appetizers and the ice cream with fried onions." A third described "wonderfully executed Thai-sourced ingredients with an Indian flavor." Gaa is a restaurant that challenges what you think Thai fine dining can be. Reservations required. Opens 5:30PM Tuesday.

Insider tip: Book through TableCheck. The juice pairing is worth adding if you do not drink alcohol. The tasting menu is the only way to eat here. Opens 5:30PM.

Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads

Home furniture brand Blu Dot blew up on CTV with help from Roku Ads Manager. Here’s how:

After a test campaign reached 211,000 households and achieved 1,010% ROAS, the brand went all in to promote its annual sales event. It removed age and income constraints to expand reach and shifted budget to custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.

The results speak for themselves. As Blu Dot increased their investment by 10x, ROAS jumped to 2,308% and more page-view conversions surpassed 50,000.

“For CTV campaigns, Roku has been a top performer,” said Claire Folkestad, Paid Media Strategist, Blu Dot. “Comping to our other platforms, we have seen really strong ROAS… and highly efficient CPMs, lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”

Using Roku Ads Manager, the campaign moved from a pilot to a permanent performance engine for the brand.
