🗞️ TOP STORY

THE BANK OF THAILAND JUST SOUNDED THE ALARM ON THE LABOR MARKET. UNEMPLOYMENT ROSE FROM 0.8% TO 1.1%. HERE IS WHAT THAT MEANS.

Thailand’s unemployment rate looks low by global standards but the direction is what matters. The Bank of Thailand’s MPC secretary Don Nakornthab confirmed after last week’s policy meeting that unemployment has climbed from a recent low of 0.8% to 1.1%, and more workers insured under Section 33 of the Social Security Act are filing for unemployment benefits. The central bank cut its private consumption growth forecast for 2026 from 2.6% to 2.3%, and expects it to fall further to just 1.7% in 2027 when the government’s co-payment subsidy expires this month. Factory closures are now outpacing new openings. Businesses in car parts, garments, rubber and plastics are suspending operations under Section 75 of the labor Protection Act, which is the legal mechanism for temporary shutdowns. New investment is increasingly “labor-light,” meaning companies are putting money in but hiring fewer people than similar investments would have created five years ago. Workers displaced from manufacturing are moving into traditional service jobs where average wages sit at 114 baht per hour, barely above where they were during Covid.

For expats and business owners, this cuts two ways. If you run a business in Thailand and hire locally, you may find more candidates available but with a growing skills mismatch. The workers losing manufacturing jobs do not automatically fit the roles that new investment is creating. If your customers are Thai consumers, their spending power is under real pressure from household debt and weaker income growth. GDP growth was revised up to 2.4% for 2026. Exports are strong. Private investment is rising. The economy is growing, it is just growing in a way that is not reaching most households yet. The central bank is watching employment conditions specifically because they feed directly into debt repayment capacity, and Thailand’s household debt problem remains one of the highest in Asia.

Bottom line: The labor market is not collapsing. It is shifting in ways that create pressure on consumption, debt repayment and the types of jobs available. The BoT raised its growth forecast but cut its consumption forecast in the same meeting. That tells you everything: the economy is producing more but households are spending less. If you work, hire or sell in Thailand, that gap is the thing to watch.

THAILAND JUST RAISED THE RETIREMENT AGE TO 65. THE REAL STORY IS WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT HOW THAI SOCIETY IS CHANGING.

The cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Social Security Act that raises the maximum age for insured employees under Section 33 from 60 to 65. The bill also increases disability compensation from 50% to 70% of wages, extends child allowances, raises maternity leave compensation and allows retirees who are unemployed to keep their social security coverage for medical benefits. Workers will also be able to use accumulated retirement savings as collateral for loans. The contribution ceiling is rising in stages: from ฿15,000 to ฿17,500 now, ฿20,000 in 2029 and ฿23,000 by 2032, which pushes the maximum possible pension up by 53%.

The deeper story is cultural. Thailand has traditionally relied on family structure to care for its elderly. Children support parents. Grandparents live with the family. But that system is under strain. Younger Thais are moving to cities for work, having fewer children, and building lives that do not always include multi-generational households. Thailand is heading toward “super-aged” status, where more than 20% of the population is over 65. The social security expansion is the government acknowledging that the traditional family safety net can no longer carry the full weight alone. The bill also extends coverage to workers who were previously invisible to the system: housekeepers, gardeners, drivers, street-stall employees, and agricultural and forestry workers. These are people who have been part of daily Thai life forever but never had formal protection against illness, disability or old age. Bringing them into the system does not just change their benefits. It changes how Thailand defines who counts as a worker.

Bottom line: The retirement age goes to 65. Disability, maternity and child benefits all go up. But the real shift is structural. Thailand is building a formal safety net to replace the informal one that families have carried for generations. For expats working here under Section 33, your contributions will rise gradually over the next six years. For everyone else, this is a window into how Thailand is preparing for a future where fewer young workers support more retirees.

PM Anutin warned again over food security as the US-Iran narrative deepens. This is the third time in a week the PM has addressed food supply concerns, stressing that Thailand remains food-secure with strong agricultural output. The repeated reassurances signal that the government is taking the global tensions seriously even while telling the public not to panic.

A Thai Airways jet departing Shanghai for Bangkok turned back after its cockpit window cracked mid-flight. Flight TG663 made an emergency landing back at Shanghai Pudong and passengers were rebooked. No injuries reported. The incident adds to a pattern of aging aircraft concerns across Thai carriers this year.

Transport operators gave the government a 60-day ultimatum on diesel prices during a rally on November 4. The Land Transport Federation is demanding lower fuel costs to stay competitive. While the ultimatum allows 60 days for a response, the federation has threatened to join a mass protest surrounding Government House as early as today, November 5, if the situation escalates. If the protest proceeds, expect traffic disruptions on routes into central Bangkok.

🏠 SPOT OF THE DAY

Hidden Bangkok Bistro is a three-story canal-side cafe, restaurant and rooftop bar in the Talat Phlu neighborhood of Thon Buri, and the view alone is worth the trip. The cafe sits directly across the Phasi Charoen Canal from Wat Paknam, giving you an unobstructed, frame-filling view of the massive golden Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thepmongkol statue. It is one of the most photographed angles in Bangkok right now. The ground floor is a cafe serving coffee, drinks and pastries. The second floor is the restaurant with Thai classics like pad kaprao and cashew nut chicken. The third floor is a rooftop bar with the best panoramic view of the Buddha, especially during golden hour when the late afternoon light hits the statue. The rooftop requires one alcoholic drink and one food item per person. Expect to pay ฿200-400 per person. The space is tucked away at the end of a narrow soi, which is exactly why it feels like a discovery. Long-tail boats cruise the canal below. The temple sits across the water. The city noise fades.

The 4.5-star rating across 1,153 Google reviews is built on that view and surprisingly solid food. “This place is top class, location, view, staff, food and drinks all top notch,” one reviewer wrote. Another said “the atmosphere, the people, and the service were phenomenal.” It is walk-in only with no reservations, and the best canal-facing seats fill up by mid-afternoon on weekends, so arrive early or come on a weekday. Dogs are allowed outside.

Insider tip: Arrive by 3PM on a weekday for the best seat on the rooftop terrace. Stay through golden hour. The Buddha turns gold as the sun drops and it is genuinely stunning. BTS Talat Phlu, then a short motorbike taxi ride or 10-minute walk through the soi. Paid parking at the mouth of the soi.
