BANGKOK JUST RANKED #9 FOR STREET FOOD. YES, REALLY.

Time Out's new 2026 ranking of the world's best street food cities has put Bangkok in ninth place, with a score of 56%. Ho Chi Minh City took the top spot at 63%, followed by Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Taipei, Mexico City, Manila, Hanoi and then Bangkok. Mumbai came in tenth. The ranking is based on survey responses and has already produced the exact reaction you would expect from Bangkok residents: disbelief. The city that has spent decades building a global reputation around pad kra pao, boat noodles, moo ping, grilled seafood and entire streets devoted to eating somehow finished behind Johannesburg.

The interesting part is that this is not necessarily saying Bangkok's food is bad. It is a ranking of the overall street food experience, and the scores are remarkably close. Bangkok's 56% is only seven points behind Ho Chi Minh City's 63%, while Hanoi sits at 57%. Still, the list is guaranteed to annoy people who live here because street food is one of the things Bangkok does better than almost anywhere. Yaowarat, Chinatown, Victory Monument, Wang Lang, Bang Rak and the city's countless neighborhood markets make it almost impossible to walk for five minutes without finding something worth eating. And if you ask Bangkok residents whether Manila, Johannesburg or Kuala Lumpur really has better street food, prepare for a long conversation.

Bottom line: rankings are subjective, but that's exactly why this one is fun. Bangkok at #9 is going to start arguments all over the city, and this is just one ranking. Our question is simpler: what city actually deserves #1?

THAILAND'S CHINESE TOURISM FORECAST HAS BEEN CUT FROM 9 MILLION TO 7 MILLION VISITORS. HERE IS WHY IT MATTERS FOR BANGKOK.

Thailand's tourism industry has cut its forecast for Chinese arrivals in 2026 from 9 million to 7 million, according to the Association of Thai Travel Agents. The downgrade reflects concerns over Thailand's safety image among Chinese travelers, reports involving scams and disappearances, and higher travel costs. The revised figure is a significant change from the optimism that surrounded the beginning of the year, when the market was expected to continue recovering toward its pre-pandemic importance.

Bangkok feels this more than almost anywhere in Thailand. Chinese visitors are a major part of the city's tourism economy, filling hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, attractions and tour buses. A weaker Chinese market does not mean Bangkok is suddenly empty. Thailand continues to attract visitors from Europe, the United States, India and other Asian markets, and the country remains one of the world's most visited destinations. But it does mean the tourism industry is having to diversify rather than relying on a single major market to drive the recovery. The fact that Thailand is now competing more aggressively with Vietnam and other regional destinations makes that even more important.

Bottom line: seven million Chinese visitors is still an enormous number. The important part is the direction. Thailand cannot assume its biggest tourism markets will automatically come back, especially when competing destinations are actively trying to take them.

Stamp Fairtex is finally coming back. The Thai combat-sports superstar will return to ONE Championship after a three-year absence caused by a knee injury. Stamp will headline ONE Fight Night 47 at Lumpinee Stadium on September 5 against Selina Flores in atomweight Muay Thai. Her comeback will also be broadcast internationally on Prime Video in the United States, making it one of the biggest Thai sporting returns of the year.

Bangkok just hosted one of China's biggest entertainment events. The Weibo Cultural Exchange Night took place at Paragon Hall on Saturday, bringing Chinese entertainment stars together with Thai actors and performers. The event included a red carpet, performances and a major Thai-Chinese entertainment crossover, with Thai BL actors among the performers. It is another sign of how closely Thailand's entertainment industry is becoming connected to China's enormous online fan economy.

David Byrne is playing Bangkok tonight. The Talking Heads frontman brings his Who Is The Sky? Tour to UOB LIVE at EMSPHERE tonight, August 10. The show begins at 8PM, with tickets starting from ฿2,800. It is a rare chance to see one of the most influential figures in art rock perform in Bangkok.
