BANGKOK JUST STOPPED ISSUING LICENSES FOR NEW DATA CENTERS. THE AI BOOM IS GROWING FASTER THAN THE POWER GRID CAN HANDLE.

Governor Chadchart announced on Wednesday that Bangkok will no longer issue new licenses for data centers in the capital, citing growing concerns about the pressure these facilities place on the city's electricity grid and water supply. About 30 to 40 data centers currently operate in Bangkok, mostly small-scale facilities serving individual businesses. But the emergence of large-scale standalone centers over the past five years, driven by the global AI boom, has changed the equation. The Ministry of Commerce has issued 1,145 permits for AI-related data centre businesses, 669 of them in Bangkok, concentrated along Rama IX Road. Digital Economy Minister Chaichanok said many are operating without proper permission.

The tension is real and it goes to the heart of Thailand's AI ambitions. Three weeks ago, the government launched TH-AI Passport to give 5 million citizens free access to AI tools. Foreign investment hit ฿219 billion in seven months, with digital infrastructure leading the sectors. The BOI received over ฿1 trillion in data centre applications in Q1 alone, roughly 2.4 times the previous year. Google, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and ByteDance have all announced major investments. Thailand wants to be Southeast Asia's AI hub. But AI runs on data centers, and data centers run on electricity and water. A single large-scale facility can consume as much power as a small city. Bangkok's grid was not built for this. The proposed solution includes a separate electricity tariff for data centers at ฿5-6 per unit, nearly double the residential rate, and requirements for operators to prove grid readiness before building. Amsterdam imposed a similar moratorium in 2019. Dublin blocked new data centre connections in 2021. Bangkok is now making the same call.

Bottom line: Thailand wants AI growth. Thailand also wants the lights to stay on. The data centre moratorium is not anti-technology. It is an admission that the infrastructure has not kept pace with the investment. The AI boom does not run on ambition alone. It runs on megawatts. And Bangkok does not have enough of them yet.

THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN JUST ARRIVED IN THAILAND. 5,000 PERSONNEL. A NUCLEAR AIRCRAFT CARRIER TWO HOURS FROM BANGKOK.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group arrived at Laem Chabang port on Tuesday, September 2, for a scheduled port visit through September 6. The nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, accompanied by supporting vessels, carries more than 5,000 personnel who have been deployed to the Middle East for months during the Hormuz Strait crisis. The port call serves two purposes: crew rest and replenishment after an extended deployment, and a visible reinforcement of the US-Thailand military alliance at a moment when both countries are navigating trade tensions over the 12.5% tariff on Thai exports.

A Nimitz-class carrier is 333 meters long, displaces over 100,000 tonnes, carries approximately 60 aircraft and is powered by two nuclear reactors. Parking one in Laem Chabang, 90 minutes from Pattaya and two hours from Bangkok, is not something that happens quietly. Local spending from 5,000 personnel on shore leave is estimated at ฿5-15 million over four days, concentrated in Pattaya's hotels, restaurants and entertainment districts. The military significance extends beyond the economics. The Abraham Lincoln was deployed to the Gulf region as part of America's response to Iran's closure of the Hormuz Strait. Its arrival in Thailand, directly from that deployment, signals that Washington considers Thailand important enough to warrant a carrier visit during one of the most tense periods in Middle East maritime security.

Bottom line: a nuclear aircraft carrier, fresh from the Gulf, is docked two hours from Bangkok through Saturday. If you happen to be in Pattaya or near Laem Chabang this week, you can see it from the waterfront.
