Bangkok's AQI readings are sitting between 138 and 159 today, firmly in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy range. That level is unusual at any time of year. In August, during the monsoon, it is genuinely abnormal. Rain is supposed to wash particulates out of the atmosphere. The wet season typically delivers Bangkok's cleanest air months. Today it is not doing that, and there are a few reasons why.

Stagnant air is the primary factor. When wind speeds drop and atmospheric pressure traps air at ground level, pollution from traffic, construction and industrial activity accumulates faster than rain can clear it. Bangkok sits in a basin surrounded by development on every side, and when the wind stops moving, the city essentially traps its own emissions. Agricultural burning in neighbouring provinces and cross-border haze from Myanmar and Cambodia can also contribute, though these are typically more severe in March and April. The monsoon rain helps in general but not in every 24-hour period, and today is one of those periods where the rain fell without the wind needed to disperse the pollution underneath it. For practical purposes: if you are in a sensitive group, which includes children, older adults, pregnant women and anyone with respiratory conditions, stay indoors with windows closed. Run an air purifier if you have one. Avoid outdoor exercise entirely today. For everyone else, limit outdoor time to essential trips and wear an N95 or KN95 mask if you need to be outside for more than a few minutes. Check IQAir or the AirVisual app throughout the day because conditions can shift.

Bottom line: this is not the season for air quality this bad, which makes it worth paying attention to. If you do not own an air purifier and you live in Bangkok, today is the day that conversation stops being theoretical. Thailand has an estimated 10.3 million civilian-held firearms, a figure that puts it among the most heavily armed nations in Southeast Asia. Gun ownership is legal with a licence, but enforcement of licensing requirements has been inconsistent, and the black market for unregistered weapons remains active. Friday's shooting is the second at a Thai school in 2026. The Nong Bua Lamphu childcare centre attack in October 2022, which killed 36 people including 24 children, led to pledges of stricter gun control that produced limited legislative change. Nation Thailand reported on August 8 that the debate has returned with new urgency, with lawmakers, civil society groups and parents asking the same question they asked in 2022: how many firearms are in circulation, who has access to them, and what is the legal framework actually doing to prevent the next attack? The answers have not changed enough since the last time the country asked them.

Bottom line: 10.34 million firearms. Two school shootings in one year. The debate is necessary. Whether it produces action this time depends on whether the political will outlasts the news cycle. It did not in 2022.
