The Department of Land Transport has opened a public consultation on a proposal to ban petrol-powered tuk-tuks from central Bangkok as part of a broader effort to reduce air and noise pollution. The proposal would remove the fuel-burning three-wheelers from designated areas of the city center, where they have been a fixture of the streetscape for decades. The consultation is seeking public input before any regulation is drafted, which means the ban is not imminent but the direction of travel is clear.

Tuk-tuks are one of the most recognizable symbols of Bangkok. They are also loud, emissions-heavy and increasingly out of step with a city that is investing billions in electric rail, congestion pricing studies and clean transport infrastructure. The proposal does not call for the elimination of tuk-tuks entirely. It targets petrol-powered models specifically, which leaves room for electric tuk-tuks to fill the gap. Electric tuk-tuks already operate in parts of the city, and manufacturers have been producing them for the Thai market for several years. The question is whether the transition happens through incentives, through regulation, or through a ban that forces the issue. For tourists, the tuk-tuk is a photo opportunity and a quintessential Bangkok experience. For residents, it is a noisy, fume-producing vehicle that contributes to the air quality problems the city has been fighting all year. For both tourists and residents it’s the most expensive form of transport, and both perspectives are valid. The public consultation is the space where they meet.

Bottom line: the petrol tuk-tuk is not disappearing tomorrow. But the fact that the Department of Land Transport is formally asking whether it should disappear from central Bangkok tells you where the policy is heading. If you have strong feelings about tuk-tuks, the consultation is open.

LINE has confirmed that LINE VOOM, the social media feature built into Thailand's most popular messaging app, will permanently shut down on September 28. Once the service closes, all photos, videos and posts stored on LINE VOOM will be permanently removed unless users download them beforehand. Regular LINE chats, calls and messaging won't be affected, but anyone who has shared memories through VOOM has less than two months to save them.

Because LINE is so deeply woven into everyday life in Thailand, many users don't even realize they've posted content to VOOM over the years. Birthdays, holidays, travel photos and short videos may all be sitting on the platform waiting to disappear. Backing up your content only takes a few minutes, but after September 28 there won't be a second chance.

Philippine Airlines says the homeless man found beneath a BTS station is NOT their pilot. Thailand is preparing to nominate the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi for UNESCO World Heritage status. The Ministry of Culture and the Department of National Parks are supporting the bid following the 48th World Heritage Committee meeting in South Korea. The WWII-era railway was built using forced labor at an enormous human cost, with an estimated 90,000 Asian laborers and more than 12,000 Allied POWs dying during its construction. The surviving section in Kanchanaburi already draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. A UNESCO listing would bring international conservation protections to a site that has always carried global significance, whether or not a committee formally recognized it.

Thailand introduced tougher nominee business checks from August 1. The Department of Business Development extended scrutiny beyond the initial company registration process to cover ongoing business operations. That means nominee structures that passed registration checks can now be flagged and investigated during their operating life, not just at the point of setup. The nominee crackdown just got permanent teeth.
