Bangkok authorities launched an emergency operation Monday evening after residents near the boundary of Khlong Toei and Yan Nawa districts reported strong chemical and oil-like odors rising from drains beneath the elevated section of Rama 3 Road. Governor Chadchart led an inspection alongside officials from the Department of Drainage and Sewerage, the Pollution Control Department and rescue teams. The concern is not just the oil. It is the vapor. Oil fumes trapped inside a closed drainage system can build up and catch fire if they meet a cigarette, open flame or other source of ignition. The BMA issued a direct warning to residents: do not light fires, do not smoke and do not do anything that could generate sparks near drain openings anywhere along the affected section of Rama 3.

Response teams deployed oil-absorbent booms inside the drainage system to contain the contamination and prevent it from spreading through Bangkok's underground network. By Tuesday evening, emergency teams had pumped out more than 16,000 liters of oil-contaminated wastewater. Governor Chadchart clarified that the affected zone on Chuea Phloeng Road previously housed a commercial oil storage yard, although there is no data center at this specific location. The contamination has been isolated within a 50-meter Y-shaped section of the drain while authorities continue investigating exactly where the oil came from and how it entered the system.

Bottom line: if you live or work near Rama 3 Road between Khlong Toei and Yan Nawa, do not smoke near drains. Do not light anything near drains. The oil vapor trapped in the drainage system could ignite. More than 16,000 liters of contaminated wastewater have already been pumped out, but authorities are still investigating the source.
