BANGKOK WAS JUST VOTED THE BEST CITY IN THE WORLD BY CONDE NAST TRAVELLER. IT WASN'T EVEN IN THE TOP 20 LAST YEAR.

Readers of Conde Nast Traveller voted Bangkok the best city in the world for 2026, topping the magazine's annual Readers' Choice Awards with a score of 97.68 out of 100. Bangkok was not in the magazine's top 20 last year. It jumped from outside the list to number one in a single year. The magazine cited markets, Michelin-starred restaurants, rooftop bars and entertainment. Bangkok also placed ninth in the magazine's 2026 friendliest cities ranking with a score of 96.16.
This is not a one-off. Bangkok has been collecting global awards in 2026 like it is running the table. Time Out named it the best city in the world for nightlife, based on a survey of 24,000 locals across 150 cities. The New York Times put it at number three on its 52 Places to Go list. The International Workplace Group ranked it the best workcation city in the world, ahead of Tokyo, Barcelona and Porto. Time Out also ranked it the eighth best city in the world overall. Bangkok just won one of the most prestigious travel award on the planet. What the awards are recognizing is something every expat already knows: Bangkok's combination of food, nightlife, culture, affordability and energy is unmatched. No other city offers Michelin-starred meals at street food prices, world-class rooftop bars, ancient temples, contemporary art galleries and a nightlife scene that Time Out says is the best on earth, all in the same place.
Bottom line: Number one. Conde Nast Traveller, 97.68 out of 100. Plus best nightlife (Time Out), best workcation city (IWG), and number three on the NYT list. Bangkok was not on Conde Nast's top 20 last year. This year it is the best city in the world. If you live here, you already knew. Now the rest of the world agrees.

ONE-THIRD OF BANGKOK COULD BE PERMANENTLY UNDERWATER BY 2050. EXPERTS SAY THIS YEAR'S FLOODING WAS A PREVIEW.

Environmental and water-management experts warned at a Thai Journalists Association seminar on October 7 that as much as one-third of Bangkok's total area could be permanently submerged by 2050 if the government fails to overhaul the country's water-management system and take more aggressive action on climate change. Sondhi Khotchawat told the forum that Bangkok's land is subsiding by 1-2 centimeters annually while sea levels in the Gulf of Thailand are rising by an average of 4 millimeters per year. By 2050, Gulf sea levels could rise by 20-30 centimeters, putting an estimated 11 to 12 million people at risk of displacement.
The numbers explain what happened in September. Bangkok sits on soft delta ground that is sinking while the water around it is rising. When a low-pressure system stalls over the city and dumps 300 millimeters of rain in 48 hours, the water has nowhere to go. The canals cannot drain fast enough. The concrete that replaced green space does not absorb anything. Eastern Bangkok and Samut Prakan are sinking at roughly 1 centimeter per year, and these are the exact neighborhoods that took the worst of the September flooding. The pattern is not random. It is structural. What happened this year will happen again, and it will get worse unless the city builds differently. The BMA has proposed at least ฿100 billion in flood defenses over the next 5-7 years. Climate scientists say that without those investments, Bangkok faces a future where monsoon season does not end with the water receding. It ends with the water staying. The September 2026 flooding was not a once-in-a-decade event. It was a preview of what the next two decades look like if nothing changes.
Bottom line: One-third of Bangkok underwater by 2050. Land sinking 1-2 centimeters per year. Sea rising 4 millimeters per year. 11-12 million people at risk. ฿100 billion proposed in flood defenses. The September flooding was not bad luck. It was a sign of what could happen, but with this information it’s possible to invest in the structural changes needed to protect the city from future flooding and changing climate.

You can now fly direct from Warsaw to Bangkok. LOT Polish Airlines launched direct flights this week, creating the first direct link between Thailand and Central Europe ahead of the year-end travel season. For European expats who fly home through connecting hubs, a direct Warsaw option opens up routing through Central Europe instead of the usual Gulf or London connections. It also signals that airlines are betting on Bangkok's growth despite the flooding headlines. Thailand is actively seeking more Polish tourists as part of its European market expansion.
A foreign TikToker was criticized after taping a phone to a moving BTS train to film content. The stunt drew backlash from Thai commuters and online commenters who pointed out the safety risks and the disrespect to public infrastructure. The BTS is not a content studio. The incident adds to a growing list of social media stunts that push boundaries on Bangkok's transit system and public spaces. The video went viral for the wrong reasons.
Applications are now open for a Sea and OpenAI regional Codex hackathon coming to Thailand next month. The hackathon takes place November 21 and registration closes October 23. The event positions Thailand as a hub for AI development in Southeast Asia. For anyone working in tech, this is a signal that the major AI companies see Bangkok as part of their regional expansion strategy, not just a market to sell into but a place where development happens. If you want in, apply before October 23.
The Vegetarian Festival begins today and runs through October 18. The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is Bangkok's most dramatic annual food event, centered in Chinatown where Yaowarat Road transforms into a nine-day celebration of plant-based eating, ceremonial processions and temple rituals. While it kicks off today, tomorrow (Saturday) features the main opening parade and major street closures on Yaowarat, so plan your transit accordingly. If you have never experienced it, this weekend is the time. Every street food stall on Yaowarat will have yellow flags marking vegetarian options. The food is incredible, the atmosphere is unlike anything else in Bangkok and it is completely free to walk through. Go after dark for the full experience.
🌙 SPOT OF THE DAY

Mandalay Rooftop Bar sits on top of the Varindavan Park Serviced Residences on Ekkamai Soi 12 and holds a distinction that no other rooftop bar in Bangkok can claim: it is the city's first and only Burmese-themed rooftop. The menu runs through Burmese and Asian cuisine alongside European options, with dishes that tell the story of Myanmar's regional cooking: Tea Leaves Salad (฿150), Kachin Grilled Fish in Foil (฿365), Shan Noodles, Chicken Wing Satay (฿150) and a Grilled Platter (฿280) that anchors the table. The cocktails are the other half of the experience. Live music, sunset views over Ekkamai and a relaxed atmosphere that reviewers describe as a place where you show up at 8PM and look up at midnight wondering where four hours went.
The 4.8-star rating across 1,200+ Google reviews at ฿1,000-1,200 is an exceptional score at volume. "Tasty food, chicken feet soup is a must try, nice music and good vibe," one reviewer wrote. Another said "really nice experience and atmosphere, try the fried dried mutton with a beer." A third described it as "very family and friendly staff service." People typically spend four hours here, which tells you everything. This is not a place you stop by for one drink. It is a Friday evening destination. Burmese food, rooftop views, live music and cocktails at a price point that feels reasonable for what you get. You will not find another rooftop like this in Bangkok because nobody else has done it. Open until 2AM.
Insider tip: The Tea Leaves Salad and the fried dried mutton are the Burmese dishes to start with. Pair them with a cold beer or cocktail while the live music plays. Friday evening is peak time. Go early if you want a good seat.
