A 24-YEAR-OLD THAI FOOTBALLER WAS KILLED BY LIGHTNING DURING A MATCH IN SOUTHERN THAILAND. TWELVE OTHER PLAYERS WERE INJURED. THE MATCH WAS STILL BEING PLAYED DURING HEAVY RAIN.

Sofwan Awae, a 24-year-old winger who had recently joined Thai League 3 club Yala FC, was struck by lightning during a Golok FA Cup semi-final match at Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat, on Tuesday, August 4. The lightning hit the middle of the pitch at approximately 5:30PM while the match between SAMCOLTS and Abu x Nong Sirin was underway during heavy monsoon rain. Twelve other players were injured, including 22-year-old Malaysian player Mohamad Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli. Sofwan's teammates rushed to him immediately and attempted to resuscitate him before emergency medical teams arrived. Despite their efforts, he could not be saved. Sungai Golok Police Chief Col. Thun Sirikhunt confirmed the death.

The footage, which has since been viewed millions of times, shows the moment lightning struck the playing area followed by a powerful explosion that sent players collapsing and scrambling. What the footage also shows is that the match was being played in heavy rain, the kind of conditions where lightning risk is at its highest. Most national and international football governing bodies have established protocols requiring matches to be suspended when lightning is detected within a defined radius of the stadium. Whether Santiphap Stadium had a lightning detection system, whether the referee was advised to suspend play, and whether the tournament organizers had a weather safety protocol in place are questions that have not yet been publicly answered. The Football Association of Thailand shared a message of sympathy. Yala FC expressed condolences to Sofwan's family. But condolences alone do not address the fundamental question: why was the match still being played?

Bottom line: Sofwan Awae was 24. He was playing the sport he loved in a semi-final. He should have come off that pitch alive. Lightning during monsoon season in southern Thailand is not unusual. Continuing a football match during heavy rain without suspending for lightning risk is. The questions about weather safety protocols at Thai regional tournaments need answers, and those answers need to come before the next monsoon match kicks off.

For the lunch crowd working in the Siam-Ploenchit corridor and for tourists exploring CentralWorld and MBK, a hawker centre offering quality street food at street food prices is going to change the midday equation.

Bottom line: the first hawker centre proved the model. The second one scales it. If Chadchart continues building these across the city, Bangkok's street food future stops being a debate about sidewalks versus hygiene and starts being a network of clean, affordable food centers in every district.
