🗞️ TOP STORIES
Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati passed away on June 11 at the age of 47.

The Bureau of the Royal Household announced that Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, passed away at 7:48PM on Wednesday, June 11, at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. She was 47 years old. She had been receiving continuous medical treatment at the hospital since December 15, 2022, after losing consciousness due to a heart-related condition while attending an event at Nakhon Ratchasima.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha held a Doctor of Juridical Science from Cornell University, served as Thailand's ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Vienna, and was a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform, women's rights and the welfare of prisoners' children. Her work with the Bangkok Rules, formally the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-Custodial Measures for Women Offenders, was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2010 and remains one of Thailand's most significant contributions to international human rights law. Mourning observances are expected. Readers should be aware that government offices may observe memorial protocols, and respectful dark or muted clothing is appropriate at official venues during the mourning period.
Bottom Line: This newsletter extends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family and to the people of Thailand. Princess Bajrakitiyabha's contributions to international law and human rights will be remembered well beyond this moment. For practical purposes, watch for announcements regarding memorial ceremonies, government office schedules and any public observance protocols in the coming days.

121 foreign nationals were detained at a Pathum Thani construction site after residents complained that Chinese workers were taking jobs reserved for Thai laborers.

A joint operation involving the Labour Ministry's employment protection division, Pathum Thani security officials, immigration police and military intelligence officers descended on a construction site inside an industrial estate in Pathum Thani on June 11. The raid was prompted by complaints from local residents who alleged that Chinese nationals were being employed in construction roles that Thai labor law reserves for Thai workers. Officers detained 121 foreign nationals found working at the site. The operation is part of a broader enforcement pattern targeting unauthorized foreign employment that has been accelerating across the Bangkok metropolitan area.
The story touches on a tension that has been building for months. Thailand's construction sector has historically relied on migrant labor from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos under regulated work permit systems. The allegation that Chinese nationals are now entering the same labor market, potentially through nominee business structures or irregular work arrangements, raises different questions about enforcement, competition and the economic pressures driving the pattern. For expats, the story is relevant because it illustrates how deeply the nominee and unauthorized work crackdowns are now reaching: this is not just about island villas, beachfront restaurants or WeChat land brokers. It is about construction sites in industrial estates in Pathum Thani. The enforcement net is widening across sectors, geographies and nationalities.
Bottom Line: Thailand's labor market protections exist for a reason, and the enforcement of those protections is accelerating. For any expat who employs staff, contracts services or operates a business in Thailand, the compliance standard has never been higher. The 121 detentions at a single construction site is a scale of enforcement that sends a message well beyond Pathum Thani.

☕ SPOT OF THE DAY
Phil Coffee Co. Rama IX (←Click Here For Directions)

Phil Coffee Co. is the kind of neighborhood cafe that the Rama 9 area has been quietly needing, and the fact that it exists on a residential soi in Suan Luang rather than a main road in Thonglor tells you something about where Bangkok's coffee scene is heading. The space is cozy, unpretentious and pet-friendly, which on a Monday morning means you can bring your dog, order a latte that someone actually cared about making, and settle into a brunch that does not require a reservation, a dress code or a BTS transfer. The Turkish Egg is the brunch standout, sitting alongside French toast, avocado open sandwiches, waffles and cinnamon rolls that hit the sweet spot between cafe casual and genuinely well-made. The coffee is specialty-grade, with espresso and pour-over options that Google reviewers consistently describe as excellent. "Pet friendly. Very good coffee. Excellent brunch," one reviewer wrote. "My go-to coffee spot in Rama 9, also dog friendly," wrote another. The 4.7-star rating across 158 reviews reflects a cafe that has earned its neighborhood following through quality and warmth rather than marketing. Prices run ฿1-200, which for specialty coffee and brunch in a comfortable, pet-friendly setting is the kind of value that makes you wonder why you keep paying Thonglor prices.
TIP: Go at opening (8AM Mondays) for the quietest experience. The Turkish Egg is the brunch order. The latte is the coffee order. Bring your dog. Address: 23 Soi Seri 7 Yeak 6, Khwaeng Suan Luang, Suan Luang, Bangkok 10250. Phone: 080 854 7878. Website: philscoffeecompany.com. Hours: Opens 8AM. Rating: 4.7 stars, 158 Google reviews.
