A CHINESE TOURIST JUMPED FROM A MOVING CAR IN KAMPHAENG PHET. HER HANDS WERE TIED WITH CABLE TIES. FOUR MEN WERE TAKING HER TOWARD THE MYANMAR BORDER.

A Chinese woman arrived in Bangkok, checked into a hotel, and was contacted by someone she believed was a tour guide. She had never met the person. They spoke only by phone. On Sunday evening, August 23, a sedan arrived to collect her from the hotel. Shortly after leaving, the car stopped to pick up three more men. She realized she had been deceived. The men took her phone, bound her hands with cable ties, struck her in the mouth with an elbow and covered her head with a cloth. The vehicle, a black Nissan Teana with Bangkok plates, headed northwest toward Mae Sot in Tak province, on the Myanmar border.

When the car approached a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet, she shouted for help. The driver accelerated through the checkpoint. During the pursuit that followed, she managed to force open the door and escape from the moving vehicle, landing on the road with her hands still bound. Passersby helped her. She was taken to Kamphaeng Phet Hospital with swollen lips and bruises across her body. Police chased the Nissan, shot out a tire and arrested two of the four men: Somkiat Thakaeo, 41, and Kittiporn Winya, 24, both from Mae Sot. The other two fled but were later apprehended. All four have been charged and detained. Investigators believe the men were hired to transport her to the border area, where she could potentially have been trafficked into a scam compound in Myanmar.

Bottom line: a tourist was picked up from a Bangkok hotel by someone she believed she could trust, bound, beaten and driven toward a border known for trafficking into scam operations. She escaped because she was brave enough to jump from a moving car at a police checkpoint. This is the second abduction toward the Myanmar border in two weeks. If someone you have never met in person offers to collect you from your hotel, do not get in the car.

The 2027 national budget is next, followed by charter amendment proposals and what is expected to be a no-confidence motion against the government. Each of these items would dominate a normal parliamentary session on its own. All four are landing in the same one.

The ฿400 billion loan is the headline number, but the budget debate is where the money actually gets allocated. The 2027 fiscal year budget determines how much goes to education, healthcare, transport, defense and every other government function for the coming year. Charter reform, which has been discussed, delayed and revived repeatedly since the 2017 constitution was imposed by the military, could reshape the political framework that governs how Thailand is run. The no-confidence motion, if filed, would force the government to defend its record. For expats and business owners, the budget debate matters most: it determines infrastructure spending, economic policy and the regulatory environment that shapes daily life. The loan decree determines whether the government has the money to fund the promises it has already made. The charter reform determines whether the rules of the game change. All of it starts now.
