Thailand has expanded automated immigration gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport to passport holders from 33 countries on arrival, up from Singapore and Hong Kong. The 31 newly added nationalities include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UAE and the UK. The gates are currently being introduced for visa-exempt arrivals, with travelers reporting limited operation since September 18.

There is one important catch: your first arrival in Thailand still requires a staffed immigration desk. That's where your biometrics are captured and added to the system. From your second arrival onward, eligible travelers can use the e-gates instead. The system may also give you a digital control slip instead of a traditional passport stamp, which is worth knowing if you rely on entry records for your visa status. On departure, automated gates have been available to biometric passport holders of all nationalities since 2023. US passports are not included in the new arrival list, along with Chinese, Indian and Russian passports.

Bottom line: if you have an eligible passport, your second arrival onward could be much faster. If you're American, you're still heading to the staffed immigration desk for now.

LIQUID ASPHALT LEAKED ONTO RAMA 9. AT LEAST 73 VEHICLES WERE DAMAGED.

At least 73 motorists filed police reports at Huamark Police Station after their vehicles were damaged on Rama 9 Road Friday. But this wasn't a flyover suddenly breaking apart. The damage came from liquid asphalt that leaked through a drainage pipe from an active elevated-road resurfacing project above. The asphalt reached the outbound lanes below and hit cars traveling underneath, damaging Mercedes-Benz and BMWs, electric vehicles and other passenger cars.

The incident has left drivers dealing with repair bills and questions about who will be responsible for the damage. If you were driving outbound on Rama 9 Friday and notice damage to your car, the advice is simple: take photos, save any dashcam footage and file a police report at Huamark Police Station. With at least 73 reports already filed, the documentation could become important as authorities work out who is responsible for the repairs.

Bottom line: if you drove under the elevated road on Rama 9 Friday, check your car carefully. What looked like falling road debris was actually liquid asphalt leaking from an active resurfacing project above.
