Suvarnabhumi Airport announced this week that a seven-month maintenance project begins Monday, August 31, and runs through April 7, 2027. Crews will repair and replace expansion joints on the elevated roadway connecting the passenger terminal to Motorway No. 7, the Bangkok-Chon Buri expressway. Three traffic lanes will be closed around each active work zone. Two lanes will remain open with traffic diverted accordingly. The airport warned that congestion will increase during busy periods and advised passengers to allow extra travel time or use the Airport Rail Link instead.

If you fly through Suvarnabhumi regularly, which most readers of this newsletter do, this changes your airport routine for the next seven months. The elevated approach road is already congested during peak hours. Losing three lanes of capacity while funneling traffic through two will turn a 45-minute taxi ride into something significantly longer on bad days. The work will be done in phases, with active zones moving as each section is completed, which means the disruption pattern will shift throughout the project. One week the slowdown might be on the outbound road. The next week it might be on the inbound. The airport is deploying traffic management personnel and warning signs, but the most practical advice they gave is the simplest: take the Airport Rail Link. The train runs from Phaya Thai and Makkasan to the terminal in 30 minutes regardless of what is happening on the road. For the next seven months, the train is not just an option. It is the smart default.

Bottom line: August 31 through April 7, 2027. Seven months. Three lanes closed. If you are catching a flight from Suvarnabhumi between now and next spring, leave earlier than you normally would or take the Airport Rail Link. Do not calculate your journey time down to the last minute. The approach road is about to get significantly slower.

Police raided a Bangkok condominium this week after investigators discovered a social media group with more than 300 members where firearms were being advertised for sale. The seller was 16 years old. Officers found a modified handgun resembling a semi-automatic pistol, additional weapons at various stages of modification, and ammunition. The teenager had been advertising the guns online, sending photographs and video to potential buyers demonstrating that the weapons were functional. When an undercover officer made contact, the teenager offered a modified gun for ฿8,500 and provided video evidence that it worked.

A 16-year-old modifying guns and selling them from a condo through a 300-member online group lands in a country that has spent the past month debating gun control after two shootings in Nonthaburi, a PM who told politicians to leave their guns at home, a freeze on lisence renewals and a 186-suspect nationwide crackdown on online gun sales. The enforcement is clearly producing results. The cyber police arrested 186 people and seized 228 firearms across 12 provinces last week alone. But the fact that a teenager was running a weapons modification and sales operation from a residential building, advertising openly on social media, tells you the supply side of the problem has not been solved by enforcement alone. The demand exists. The platforms exist. And a 16-year-old figured out how to connect the two from his bedroom.

Bottom line: 16 years old. Modified semi-automatic. ฿8,500 per gun. 300-member online group. The police shut down this operation, but the bigger problem is how easily it was able to exist in the first place.
