Deputy Commerce Minister Suphajee Srisunthorn announced Saturday that Thailand and the United States have reached agreement on the core terms of a bilateral trade deal. Washington has assured Thailand of fair, competitive tariffs, while negotiators continue working to settle remaining technical details. The announcement is the most significant development in the trade relationship since the US imposed a 12.5% tariff on Thai exports in July, a move that triggered weeks of uncertainty across Thailand's export-dependent economy.

The tariff has been one of the most consequential economic stories we have covered since this newsletter began. The 12.5% duty affected Thai manufacturers, agricultural exporters and the businesses that depend on them. Thai Airways reported a Q2 profit drop of 87% partly due to Hormuz disruptions and the trade uncertainty. The baht weakened to a 15-month low. The JSCCIB revised its growth forecasts multiple times. Now, two months later, the framework of a deal is in place. The word "fair" in the announcement matters: it signals that the final tariff rate may be lower than 12.5%, though the exact number has not been disclosed. The word "competitive" matters too: it suggests Thailand's rate will not disadvantage it against Vietnam, Indonesia and other ASEAN exporters competing for the same US market access. The technical details still being negotiated will determine whether this is a genuine breakthrough or a diplomatic statement that buys time.

Bottom line: the core terms are agreed. The tariff rate is not yet public. But the direction is positive, and the fact that both sides are using words like "fair" and "competitive" tells you the negotiation has moved past confrontation and into the kind of language that precedes a signed agreement. Jet ski incidents in Phuket are a recurring theme, and the proximity to a loaded passenger boat elevates this from reckless behavior to a genuine safety incident.
