DNA TESTS JUST EXPOSED 24 MORE CHINESE CHILDREN WITH FAKE THAI FATHERS. A MOTORCYCLE TAXI RIDER WAS PAID ฿5,000 TO REGISTER AS SOMEONE’S FATHER. 46 ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED.

Thai police announced on Tuesday that DNA tests have confirmed 24 more people whose Thai birth certificates list Thai men as their fathers when their biological fathers are actually Chinese. The “fathers for hire” network recruited Thai men to acknowledge paternity of children born to Chinese mothers so the children could obtain Thai citizenship. In one case, a motorcycle taxi rider named Somkiat admitted to being paid ฿5,000 to register as the father of a child he had never met. In another, a 27-year-old man named Thaweesak, whose birth certificate listed a Thai man named Wanchai as his father and a Chinese woman as his mother, was arrested at a home in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thian district where he was living with his Chinese parents. DNA confirmed a Chinese man is his biological father. His entire Thai identity was fabricated before he was born.

Police have issued 46 arrest warrants covering government officials, hospital staff, Chinese mothers, Thai men acting as nominee fathers, biological foreign fathers and others involved. Eight hospitals have been identified in the investigation. The scheme worked like this: Chinese women entered Thailand and recruited Thai men to acknowledge paternity. Children were then recorded as having Thai fathers, which entitled them to Thai citizenship. The investigation, led by Immigration Bureau commissioner Noppasilp Poonsawat, has identified cases spanning decades, from children as young as three to adults in their late twenties. The children’s Chinese mothers in several cases have already left Thailand. In one instance, a mother departed for China on September 30, just weeks before the investigation widened. For context, Thai citizenship provides access to healthcare, education, property ownership and voting rights that are otherwise restricted for foreign nationals.

Bottom line: 24 fake birth certificates. 46 arrest warrants. Eight hospitals. Thai men paid as little as ฿5,000 to register as fathers they never were. This is not a small operation. It is a multi-decade citizenship fraud network involving government officials, hospital staff and organized recruitment across borders. The investigation is widening.

THAI AUTHORITIES HAVE NOW SEIZED ฿35.8 BILLION FROM THE MAUERBERGER SCAM NETWORK. THAT INCLUDES ฿14.8 BILLION IN THAI STOCK MARKET SHARES.

Thai authorities announced on Monday that total seized and frozen assets linked to South African businessman Benjamin Mauerberger and Cambodian entrepreneur Yim Leak have reached ฿35.8 billion. The latest freeze includes roughly ฿14.8 billion worth of shares in companies listed on the Thai stock exchange, including Bangchak Corporation, VGI and MFC Asset Management. The shares were acquired through private placements to three groups of foreign funds, which the SEC says showed irregularities. Money was transferred from Cambodia into Thai accounts linked to the network before being moved to Singapore-based investment funds. Mauerberger and his Thai wife fled Thailand in September 2025 and are believed to have moved from Dubai to the Seychelles.

If you have not been following this story, here is the short version. Mauerberger presented himself as a stock market expert, allegedly defrauded foreign investors in property, stock and energy deals, and laundered proceeds from Cambodia-based cyber scam operations through Thai nominees and financial institutions. A deputy finance minister in a previous government resigned after a report alleged his wife received $3 million in cryptocurrency from the network. Police have charged Mauerberger with fraud and money laundering causing over ฿1 billion in damages. The government says seized assets will become state property and be distributed back to victims proportionally. At ฿35.8 billion, this is the largest financial crime seizure in recent Thai history and it touches the stock market, the political establishment and the cross-border scam economy that has dominated Southeast Asian headlines for the past two years.

Bottom line: ฿35.8 billion. Thai stocks, Cambodian scam money, Singapore funds, a fugitive in the Seychelles and a political resignation in Bangkok. This is Thailand’s state capture moment. The seizure is enormous. The question is how much of it reaches the victims.

Khao San Road is planning its biggest Halloween party yet and asking for a 4AM closing time. If this goes well, expect the entertainment zone conversation to accelerate.

Every single raw enoki mushroom sample tested in Bangkok contained Listeria bacteria. The National Food Institute tested five samples from five different market locations, including major supermarkets and open-air wet markets across the city. All five came back positive for Listeria monocytogenes, which causes fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting and in severe cases can be dangerous for pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. The CDC advises against eating raw enoki mushrooms. If you eat hotpot, shabu, sukiyaki or any dish where enoki arrives uncooked at the table, make sure it goes into the boiling broth before you eat it. Cook it thoroughly. Do not eat it raw off the plate.

A Thai 7-Eleven assistant store manager went viral for speaking seven languages. Teerawat Wanichkam, known as Tony, works at the BITEC Bang Na branch and was filmed switching between languages while serving customers. If you have ever attended a convention at BITEC, you may have walked right past him. In a city where most convenience store interactions are limited to “bag?” and “Truemoney?”, Tony turned a counter shift into something worth watching. The clip has racked up millions of views.

🍸 SPOT OF THE DAY

Blue Sky sits on the 24th floor of the Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao, which puts it on the north side of Bangkok rather than the usual Sukhumvit or Silom rooftop circuit. That matters because the views are different up here. You are looking out over the Chatuchak and Ladprao skyline, with the city stretching to the horizon in every direction and none of the skyscraper-blocked sightlines you get downtown. The restaurant side serves French bistro cuisine with signature dishes including bone marrow, golden lobster thermidor, a grilled seafood tower, mixed grill Australian beef, scallop ceviche and a souffle cheesecake that reviewers keep coming back for. The bar side runs cocktails at around ฿400 for signatures, with a midnight blue design.

The 4.8-star rating across 1,377 Google reviews puts Blue Sky among the highest-rated rooftop dining experiences in Bangkok. “Good food, good vibe, good view, good service,” one recent reviewer wrote. Another said “we did not expect much after our long day but it exceeded our expectations.” A third called it “a rooftop experience to remember, stunning view, perfect food, impeccable service.” The staff are praised by name in nearly every review, which is always the sign of a place that has its service culture right. Budget around ฿1,000-1,500 per person for dinner. HungryHub runs deals starting at ฿990 for three dishes with free-flow mocktails. Dress code is smart casual. Reservations recommended, especially for outdoor seating on weekends. If you live north of the river or anywhere near Chatuchak and you have been defaulting to Sukhumvit rooftops, Blue Sky is the reason to stop commuting across town for a night out.

Insider tip: Book through HungryHub for the set dinner deals, they are significantly cheaper than a la carte. Ask for outdoor seating and arrive before 7PM for the best light. The bar stays open until 1AM, so you can do dinner at the restaurant side and move to the bar for cocktails after.
