Thailand Wants ฿100 Billion for Drug Research. Global Pharma Is Already Circling.

THAILAND WANTS ฿100 BILLION IN PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH INVESTMENT. GLOBAL PHARMA IS ALREADY CIRCLING.

Government spokesman Dr. Ekkapob Pianpises announced Saturday that Thailand's Public Health Ministry is in active negotiations with 10 global pharmaceutical companies to attract ฿100 billion in drug research and local production investment. Merck Sharp & Dohme has emerged as the first major partner, with discussions covering vaccine manufacturing, clinical trials and technology transfer. Roche is separately discussing potential research projects worth ฿15 billion alone. Further negotiations with Sandoz and several other multinational drugmakers are expected in the coming weeks.

Thailand's pharmaceutical market reached approximately ฿240 billion in 2024, making it the third-largest in Southeast Asia behind Indonesia and Vietnam. But the country imports roughly 65% of the medicines it uses, leaving hospitals dependent on international shipping, foreign manufacturing and trade routes that can be disrupted by geopolitical events. The ฿100 billion target is therefore about more than growing the industry. It is about reducing that dependency. If Thailand can manufacture more pharmaceuticals, APIs and biopharmaceuticals domestically, the country becomes less vulnerable when global supply chains break. The 2023-2027 national pharmaceutical strategy already set a target to increase domestic production by ฿100 billion and pharmaceutical exports to ฿13 billion. With more than 21% of the population now over 60 and demand for chronic disease medications rising, the case for building more of the supply chain inside Thailand is getting stronger.

Bottom line: ฿100 billion in pharmaceutical investment. Ten global companies in talks. Roche alone discussing ฿15 billion. Thailand is trying to become a pharmaceutical research and manufacturing hub, not simply a market for imported medicine. The Hormuz crisis showed how quickly global supply chains can become vulnerable. Building more production at home is essentially an insurance policy against the next disruption.

Thailand sent 15 gaming companies to Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, one of the world's largest gaming conventions, and the delegation returned with a business pipeline worth more than ฿270 million. The companies showcased Thai-developed games, gaming technology, animation and digital content to international publishers, distributors, investors and platform operators. For smaller Thai studios, getting directly in front of those buyers can be difficult without an international platform of this scale.

The ฿270 million pipeline matters because it represents something Thailand's creative economy has been pursuing for years: international commercial viability. Thailand has a deep pool of digital artists, developers and animators and has long served as an outsourcing hub for game art and visual effects. But outsourcing means foreign publishers and studios often capture most of the value while Thai companies provide the talent. Gamescom gives Thai developers a chance to pitch their own intellectual property directly to international buyers. A ฿270 million pipeline across 15 companies works out to more than ฿18 million per company on average, although the actual deals will vary. The gaming industry remains small compared with Thailand's automotive, electronics and agricultural exports, but it has something those industries do not: digital products that can reach global markets without being shipped across a border.

Bottom line: Thailand's gaming industry went to Germany and came back with ฿270 million in potential business. The creative economy is no longer just a side story in Thailand's export strategy. It is an emerging industry built around intellectual property, talent and digital distribution. ฿270 million is a signal of what could come next.

Thailand abolished the VAT exemption for imported online purchases under ฿1,500. Tax is now collected from the first baht on all imported goods ordered online, regardless of value. The previous exemption meant small packages from overseas retailers like Shein, Temu and AliExpress entered the country tax-free if they fell below the threshold. That loophole is closed. For anyone who regularly orders clothes, electronics, accessories or household items from international platforms, the price at checkout is no longer the price you pay. VAT will be added at import. The change is designed to level the playing field for Thai retailers who have been competing against tax-free imports for years, but the practical effect for consumers is straightforward: everything you order from abroad just got more expensive.

138 serving senators could lose their seats tomorrow at 3PM. The Election Commission will announce its ruling on collusion allegations involving 229 people, including 138 sitting senators. If the allegations are upheld, it would be one of the largest mass disqualifications in Thai political history. Seven election commissioners are reviewing the evidence.
