Laboratory tests on seized vape pod liquid found methamphetamine hydrochloride at 3.56% concentration and etomidate, a powerful anesthetic used in hospital settings that can cause unconsciousness, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. Thai authorities issued a public warning describing the contaminated pods as carrying a risk of "sudden death." The pods were seized during enforcement operations and tested by government laboratories. The specific brands, distribution channels and retail locations involved have not been fully disclosed, which means the contaminated products could still be in circulation.

Vaping is technically illegal in Thailand. Penalties can include fines and imprisonment, though enforcement has been inconsistent, and millions of people across the country use vape products purchased through grey-market channels, online sellers and street vendors.
