🗞️ TOP STORIES

A Thai caretaker was arrested for allegedly stealing a Swiss expat's ฿12.5 million vinyl collection in Hua Hin.

Police have arrested a Thai caretaker accused of stealing a record collection worth more than 12.5 million baht from a Swiss expat living in Hua Hin. The collection reportedly included over 1,000 vinyl records and 400 CDs accumulated over three decades while the owner lived in Chicago, Switzerland and Thailand. The caretaker was arrested last week after an investigation into the disappearance of the collection from the expat's home.

The story has exploded online because of the eye-catching number attached to it. Twelve and a half million baht worth of records sounds almost unbelievable until you remember how valuable rare collectibles have become. But beyond the headline, it touches on something many expats immediately understand. Thousands of foreign homeowners across Thailand rely on caretakers, cleaners, drivers and property managers to oversee homes while they're away. Most relationships work perfectly well. Occasionally, however, a case emerges that highlights the risks involved when valuable assets are left under someone else's supervision.

Bottom Line: The records make the headline. The trust issue is the real story. If you own property in Thailand and rely on staff to manage it while you're away, regular inventories, cameras and clear oversight are far cheaper than replacing a collection worth eight figures.

Bangkok plans to remove freight trains from the city center within three months following the Makkasan crash.

Thailand's Transport Ministry says freight trains entering inner Bangkok could be removed within three months as authorities continue responding to the deadly Makkasan rail crossing accident that killed eight people and injured dozens last month. The proposal represents the most significant policy response so far following the collision between a freight train and a public bus near Makkasan station.

For most residents, freight trains are largely invisible until something goes wrong. But they remain an important part of Bangkok's logistics network, moving cargo through some of the city's most densely populated districts. Officials are now examining whether those routes still make sense in a city that has expanded dramatically around infrastructure originally built decades ago. Any change would affect logistics operators, rail planning and potentially the daily movement of goods around the capital.

Bottom Line: Accidents trigger investigations. Major accidents trigger policy changes. If the ministry follows through on its timeline, Bangkok's transportation network could look noticeably different before the end of the year.

QUICK HITS

  • 121 foreign nationals detained at a Pathum Thani construction site. Authorities launched a joint operation after complaints that Chinese workers were allegedly performing jobs reserved for Thai nationals. Another sign that labor and nominee enforcement is expanding beyond tourist areas and into Greater Bangkok.

  • Bangkok nominee business crackdown expands deeper into the capital. Economic Crime Suppression Division officers conducted raids across multiple Bangkok locations, seizing documents, cash and luxury assets linked to alleged nominee structures.

  • 87 airlines held talks about Bangkok flight slots last week. After months of reduced capacity, carriers are actively looking at adding flights back into Thailand. One of the clearest signals yet that aviation demand is recovering.

  • Bangkok AQI remains among the best seen all year. Most monitoring stations stayed firmly in the Good category. A rare sentence for Bangkok in June.

SPOT OF THE DAY

Kurasu Bangkok (←Click Here For Directions)

Kurasu Bangkok is the kind of coffee shop that reminds you how global Bangkok's cafe scene has become. Originally founded in Kyoto, Japan, Kurasu brought its minimalist Japanese coffee philosophy to Sukhumvit 43 and quietly built a following among coffee obsessives, remote workers and Japanese expats. The space is clean, calm and intentionally understated. No gimmicks. No neon signs. Just extremely good coffee made by people who take coffee very seriously.

The menu focuses on carefully sourced beans, pour-overs and espresso drinks prepared with almost obsessive attention to detail. The result is some of the most consistently excellent coffee you'll find in Bangkok. The clientele is a mix of locals, expats and visitors who often stay longer than planned. It's one of those places where ordering a simple black coffee becomes an experience rather than a transaction.

TIP: Skip the flavored drinks and order a pour-over. Arrive before 10AM if you want the quietest atmosphere. Perfect spot for a slow morning, a laptop session or a coffee date that doesn't involve fighting crowds. Address: 1109/2 Sukhumvit Road, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110. Phone: 064 941 2639. Website: kurasu.kyoto. Hours: Open daily 7AM-6PM. Rating: 4.6 stars, 247 Google reviews. Price: ฿1-200 per person.
