🗞️ TOP STORIES
A 26-year-old Thai flight attendant was arrested at Melbourne Airport after Australian officers found over 1kg of heroin concealed inside her luggage.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed the arrest on June 25 after Australian Border Force officers selected the woman's baggage for random inspection as she arrived on an international flight while performing work duties. An X-ray screening detected irregularities in 12 cloth bags. A thorough examination uncovered white powder concealed inside the bag linings, which preliminary testing identified as heroin with a total weight exceeding one kilogram. The estimated street value was A$500,000, 345,000 USD or approximately 11.5 million baht. The AFP did not release the woman's name, her specific job position or the name of the airline she worked for. However we do know from numerous reports she is a Thai Airways hostess.
She has been charged with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug under Australia's Criminal Code. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment. The court denied bail on June 26, and she is scheduled to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on September 14. AFP Acting Commander Simone Butcher said the agency would continue targeting individuals who exploit positions of trust to facilitate drug trafficking. ABF Commissioner Clint Sims stated that criminal groups continue to attempt infiltration by using trusted personnel, including airline crew and staff, to smuggle drugs into Australia. For the Thai aviation industry, the arrest is another reputational blow during a period when airlines are already under pressure from fuel costs, seat cuts and route suspensions.
Bottom Line: A flight attendant used her crew access to move heroin through an international airport in her work luggage. The position of trust that airline crew hold, bypassing standard passenger screening, is exactly what trafficking networks exploit. Australia caught it through a random inspection. The question this raises for every airline operating Thai international routes is how many bags have not been randomly selected.

Koh Samui was just named the best island in the Asia-Pacific region at the Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards 2026.

The recognition was announced by Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploythalay Laksamisaengchan, who confirmed that the government welcomed the result. Koh Samui's airport and five of its resorts also collected top-10 finishes across separate categories at the same awards ceremony. The island beat out competition from across the entire Asia-Pacific, including destinations in Indonesia, the Maldives, Japan and the Philippines. The luxury award repositions Samui as a premium destination that has quietly built world-class hospitality infrastructure.
The timing matters. Tourist arrivals to Thailand fell 2.3% in the first five months of 2026. The Hormuz crisis cut airline seats and pushed fares up. The visa-free stay was halved from 60 to 30 days. And Vietnam is actively closing the competitive gap. Against that backdrop, international luxury awards are not just trophies. They are marketing ammunition. When Travel + Leisure tells its readership that Koh Samui is the best island in Asia-Pacific, it reaches exactly the high-spending, long-staying demographic that Thailand's tourism sector most needs to attract right now. If you have been thinking about a long weekend outside Bangkok, the island that just won the best-in-region award is a three-hour flight or an overnight train and ferry away.
Bottom Line: The award is real. The resorts are real. And if you have been in Bangkok for months without a break, Samui's combination of beaches, luxury hospitality and a Travel + Leisure stamp of approval makes it the strongest weekend escape option Thailand has right now.

🍽️ SPOT OF THE DAY
Rongros (←Click For Directions)

Rongros sits on Maharat Road in Old Town with a direct view of Wat Arun across the river, and it is the kind of restaurant that makes you wonder why you have been eating Thai food anywhere else. The menu is traditional Thai done with genuine care: the watermelon and aromatic crispy snakehead fish is the dish that keeps appearing in reviews as the order that changes people's expectations. The seafood tom yum soup, palo egg stew, pad thai and fried spring rolls are all on the "popular" list for a reason. The mango sticky rice closes the meal. Indoor and outdoor seating are both available, with the outdoor tables offering the Wat Arun view that makes this restaurant impossible to replicate anywhere else in the city.
"Excellent Thai food with a lovely atmosphere and great service. Great direct view of Wat Arun for photos," one reviewer wrote. "Authentic Thai food with great service and atmosphere," wrote another. The 4.7-star rating across 4,655 Google reviews is one of the highest-rated Thai restaurants in the city at that volume. Reservations are required, which on a Tuesday evening is the difference between the riverside table and a 45-minute wait.
TIP: Reserve ahead via LINE or call. Request an outdoor table for the Wat Arun view. Go at 5:30PM for sunset light on the temple. The crispy snakehead fish is the first order.
