Thailand ranked the second-best country in the world to retire in 2026.

Thailand has been ranked the second-best country in the world to retire abroad in 2026, according to the Retirement Abroad Index published by UK-based international insurer Expatriate Group. Thailand scored 77 out of 100, finishing just one point behind the Philippines and ahead of traditional retirement destinations including Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. For anyone already living here, the result probably won't come as much of a surprise.

The ranking evaluated healthcare quality, visa accessibility, health insurance requirements, cost of living and expat integration. Thailand performed particularly well in healthcare and affordability, two areas that continue to attract retirees from around the world. Private hospitals in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket remain internationally respected while costing a fraction of comparable facilities in many Western countries. The country's biggest weakness was expat integration, with the report noting that English becomes less common outside major tourist and expat centers. Even so, Thailand's combination of lifestyle, infrastructure and affordability remains difficult to match globally.

Bottom Line: Rankings come and go, but Thailand finishing ahead of much of Europe reinforces something many expats already know. If your priorities are healthcare, affordability and quality of life, there are very few places in the world that can compete.

Chinese human trafficking gang leader arrested at Bangkok hotel.

Thai police arrested a Chinese national accused of leading an international human trafficking syndicate at a hotel in Bangkok's Din Daeng district on Tuesday. Chinese authorities allege the 40-year-old suspect helped organise the illegal movement of women from Myanmar into China while facilitating unlawful matchmaking operations involving Chinese men. He was considered a high-priority target by Chinese law enforcement.

Investigators say the suspect fled China and used Thailand as a base while evading prosecution. Authorities tracked him to a hotel near Pracharat Bamphen Road after receiving a formal request from Chinese police. Immigration records reportedly showed he had entered and exited Thailand at least 21 times before his arrest. His visa has now been revoked and he is expected to be extradited to China. The case highlights the increasingly close cooperation between Thai and foreign authorities as Bangkok continues to serve as a major regional hub.

Bottom Line: Thailand's position as one of Asia's most connected countries makes it attractive for tourists, businesses and unfortunately fugitives. Cases like this show how aggressively authorities are now targeting international criminal networks operating across borders.
